AFRICAN GODS
CHAPTER ONE
(THE AFRICAN GODS HAVE A GENERAL MEETING)
CHIEF : The rain has not come yet Ororo...
RAINMAKER : High leader the rain will not come until our sins are absolved by Mulungu
CHIEF: What do you mean ?We make sacrifices each blood moon?
HEALER: Ororo is right. Our people have fallen short of Mulungu's glory.
CHIEF: What do you know of politics? You are just a Healer Pendo.
RAINMAKER: We need to make a sacrifice to all the African God's.
CHIEF: Go consult the Oracle Ororo and come back with an answer or YOU will be the sacrifice you so crave for!
CHIEF: Yes Pendo you are to come to me with the internal affairs of the camp?
HEALER: Yes Mukuru...
HEALER: There are more dead bodies due to the plague. If we do not get any more rain, I fear our people will be in grave danger.
CHIEF: Are you not deaf? Ororo will consult the gods
CHIEF: Your work is to assist the sickly and heal them. You know nothing of politics.
HEALER: I hear whispers of a civil war between the Donke family and Mutuse family.
HEALER: There are having secret meetings of Heresy.
CHIEF: I will deal with it. Now go do your job!
(Pendo leaves while the Chief becomes melancholic on his Iron Throne)
CHAPTER TWO
( On early morning on the sacred mountain before the sunrise)
RAINMAKER: O thee BABA listen to my counsel!
( He pours a portion of his secret concoction to the ground and drinks it)
BABA: Who disturbs me from my SLEEP!
RAINMAKER: I come in peace my Good Fere!
(He proceeds to put a sacrifice of gold dust fetched by the river side and a calabash of traditionally brewed palm wine)
RAINMAKER: It is I the.. RAINMAKER ORORO!
BABA: WHAT DO YOU WANT?!
RAINMAKER: We have not had rain for this past season, out wells run deep and dry,our people are dying!
BABA: Your people have dishonoured me and are a pestilence to my eyes!
RAINMAKER: Hear my plea All fere!
BABA: The Higher Gods do not give you what you so wish as you have to pay your PENANCE!
RAINMAKER: What are we to do to make peace with the Gods
BABA: You must sacrifice each first born son before the moon turns crimson!
RAINMAKER: How? We are at war with the Bukuse tribe. How are we to defend our people?!
BABA: FOR THIS IS MY ONLY ALIMONY!
( THE RAINMAKER leaves the sanctuary albeit disappointed)
ORORO: I have returned from my quest with the OLD GODS.
CHIEF: What news do you bring?
ORORO: I am afraid I am a bearer of bad news today.
CHIEF: SPIT IT OUT OR I WILL HAVE YOUR TONGUE!!!
ORORO: The Gods spoke to me and said we must sacrifice a first born son from each family...
CHIEF: Impossible! Do they not understand we are at war and every first born male must be circumcised and made ready for war.
ORORO: Yes! I know this. Did I not warn you? The Gods are weary of our sins and this is the only atonement!
CHIEF: You are an imbecile spitting on my leadership!
ORORO: Do you question the judgements of the OLD GODS.
CHIEF: No I do not! I question your own judgement Ororo! By evening I will have your body by the gallows. Speak nothing of this to anyone in the village for I will have your head on a spike by morning.
CHIEF: Where is Pendo the Healer?!
( The Chief calls his subordinates and demands an audience with Pendo)
CHIEF: You have my permission to leave...
ORORO: Thank you
CHIEF: Dont thank me yet. I should arrest you for Heresy!
(Pendo arrives)
CHIEF: What do the people say now that we have no rain for our crops.
PENDO: They say that we have wronged the Gods and this is attonment for our sins.
CHIEF: We have to call a meeting with the rest of the village. I have some news we have to tell. Gather the people.
PENDO: At your behest my imminence!
(The whole village gathers with their families and children)
CHIEF: I know we have not had rains for our crops our animal sacrifices are falling on dead ears.
Villager 1: We cannot continue like this!
Villager 2: Our children are dying!
CHIEF: Silence my people!
CHIEF: We are at the brink of war...each family will have to give a child for a sacrifice!
Villager 3: No we do not agree! Who will protect us once the Bukuse people attack is when we are at our weakest!
CHIEF: This is my order only the last child of the second family is to be given as a sacrifice. THE GODS ARE DEAD!!!
PENDO: What about the rains?!
CHIEF: Is it food you seek when we our people are being tortured and killed for land and cattle! DO NOT MAKE ME ANGRY!!!
CHIEF: OR I WILL SEND YOU TO THE GALLOWS!!!!
CHIEF: THIS IS MY DECREE!
(The villagers leave with whispers and murmmurs. The old chief sat on his Iron Throne sad and melancholic)
