LIFE OF A HERMIT

LIFE OF THE HERMIT

The Life of a Hermit is the topic for today. Now, what is a hermit? In my understanding a hermit is someone who lives outside the societal norms refusing to be conformed by the current state of the world of civilization, he retreats into the depths of solitude that is where he resides in his own strength.

Whenever I mention the word hermit some people think it's an old middle aged man living in a somewhat forests who has a cabin and hunts for his own meals, living alone in isolation. But I beg the question is it possible to live like a hermit in the 21st century especially in the digital era where everything is online, banks, jobs, supermarkets, courses etc.?

I myself admire the hermit lifestyle or loner if you would like to call it that, there are so many reasons why I find it profound. The fact that this individual has the inner will and strength to fight the current stigma of having a significant other so to speak to. I think that as I get older that feeling in life that your missing something. You try and fill it up with work, a relationship or even a family but the hole keeps on getting bigger and bigger.

Then you realize that you have to live with this hole. Instead of looking for external stimuli you recede in confidentiality, nobody knows the real you and only you do in an individual level. This hermit lifestyle was depicted very well by a movie I once watched where the protagonist, a tech billionaire, left his home and identity and retreated to the alps for in search of meaning, to live with the monks and to discover himself. After the vigorous training he emerged from the darkness and found himself.

I find that the world in which we live in holds so many utilities for worry, pressure, anxieties from the moment you start working until marriage and death. Sometimes we need to look at the bigger picture step back and ask yourself is this it? Is this what I studied all those years for? Is this all the hours I worked for? Is this really me?

As soon as you ask yourself these kind of questions is when you truly find meaning and self discovery. Don't go into life asking for fish instead ask yourself, can I be taught how to fish instead. I will end by saying this:

'"he two most important days in life are the moment you were born and the reason why you find out why."
